Skincare Secrets with Leah Fortune: How Personalized Skincare Can Transform Your Skin & Confidence

In a glowing episode of the Make It Count show, host Michelle Latocha sat down with Leah Fortune, owner of Gratitude Skincare, to discuss personalized skincare, skincare myths, and the importance of self-care through skin health. Leah’s expertise in custom facial treatments, skin hydration, and proper product selection offers invaluable insights into achieving healthy, radiant skin at any age.
Through their candid conversation, Leah shared how skin changes over time, why expensive products aren’t always better, and the most underrated skincare tip that can completely transform your routine. She also debunked popular skincare myths, providing expert guidance on choosing the best skincare products, maintaining youthful skin, and building a daily routine that works.
Many people struggle with finding the right skincare routine because they follow generalized advice rather than customizing their skincare based on their specific needs. Leah emphasized that skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all—it evolves as we age, experience environmental changes, and introduce new products into our regimen.
“When you come in for a facial, I don’t know exactly what I’m going to do until I see your skin that day,” Leah explained. “Your skin changes, and so should your routine.”
She encourages people to listen to their skin, focus on hydration, and regularly reassess their skincare products to ensure they’re using the right formulations.

During the episode, Michelle and Leah played a “Myth or Must” skincare game, where Leah debunked common misconceptions and highlighted what really works.
Ice Rollers Reduce Puffiness – TRUE
Cold therapy can help reduce facial puffiness, calm inflammation, and tighten pores. However, Leah explains that you don’t need fancy tools—simply splashing your face with cold water for 20-30 seconds can be just as effective.
Drinking Collagen Improves Skin – PARTIALLY TRUE
While collagen supplements can be beneficial for joint health and digestion, there is limited scientific evidence proving that drinking collagen directly improves skin elasticity and glow. Leah suggests focusing on hydration, a balanced diet, and topical skincare ingredients like vitamin C and hyaluronic acid for visible skin benefits.
Expensive Skincare Products Are Always Better – FALSE
Leah strongly emphasized that price does not determine quality. Some high-end skincare brands use marketing gimmicks rather than superior ingredients. She encourages consumers to check ingredient lists, focus on formulation, and choose dermatologist-approved products instead of falling for luxury branding.
Oily Skin Should Skip Moisturizer – FALSE
Many people believe that moisturizing makes oily skin worse, but Leah debunks this myth. “If you don’t hydrate your skin properly, it will overcompensate by producing more oil,” she explains. Even oily skin needs a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer to maintain balance.
DIY Skincare with Kitchen Ingredients Works – BE CAUTIOUS
Leah advises against random DIY skincare hacks seen on social media. While natural ingredients like honey and oatmeal can be beneficial, most raw food products (like banana peels or potato slices) don’t have the proper formulation to effectively penetrate the skin. Instead, she recommends using science-backed skincare products that are specifically designed for absorption and effectiveness.

Leah highlighted that one of the biggest mistakes people make is not cleansing properly. “50% of your skincare routine’s success comes from using the right cleanser,” she explained.
Many clients improve their skin dramatically just by switching to a cleanser that matches their skin type.
Foaming Cleansers – Best for oily skin and acne-prone skin, as they help control excess oil and unclog pores.
Cream/Milky Cleansers – Ideal for dry skin and sensitive skin, providing gentle hydration while cleansing.
Oil Cleansing & Double Cleansing – Great for removing makeup, SPF, and deep impurities, ensuring the skin is thoroughly clean without stripping its natural barrier.
For Leah, skincare is more than just about looking good—it’s about feeling good. She encourages people to view skincare as a self-care ritual rather than a chore.
“Wash your face as soon as you get home,” she advises. This prevents people from skipping their routine due to exhaustion and ensures they are removing makeup, pollutants, and bacteria before bed.
She also recommends incorporating relaxing elements into skincare, like aromatherapy and facial massage, to turn it into a calming experience rather than a task.
Throughout the episode, Leah provided practical skincare advice that anyone can follow, regardless of age or skin type. The key takeaway? Skincare should be simple, effective, and consistent. Your skincare routine should be personalized—not based on trends. Hydration is key for all skin types (yes, even oily skin). Expensive doesn’t mean better—focus on ingredients and formulation instead. Proper cleansing is essential—if your skin isn’t clean, the rest of your products won’t work effectively. Skincare is self-care—take time to make your routine a relaxing, enjoyable experience.
