Unlocking Your Potential: Empowerment Coaching with Sue Wedsworth
In a recent episode of Make It Count, host Michelle Latocha sat down with Sue Wedsworth, founder of Worth Results, to discuss empowerment coaching and Sue's remarkable journey of self-discovery and transformation. Sue's mission is clear: helping people realize their potential by overcoming self-imposed barriers and societal expectations. Her story is one of resilience, a pursuit of passion, and a dedication to empowering others, particularly women.
Sue's work centers on helping people "get out of their own way." She explains how fear, self-doubt, and societal programming can inhibit individuals from pursuing fulfilling lives. By shifting mindsets and reigniting the belief in limitless potential, Sue helps her clients rediscover the dreams and passions they may have abandoned during adulthood.
She describes how adulthood often replaces childhood aspirations with cynicism and rigid logic. Yet, with the right guidance, individuals can reconnect with their true desires, move past negative thoughts, and achieve happiness and fulfillment.
Sue's journey to becoming an empowerment coach was not a straightforward one. She began her career as a small business consultant, assisting entrepreneurs in launching their ventures. Although she loved the work, financial instability and the lure of a corporate career led her to banking, where she sought stability and success. However, despite achieving a lucrative position, Sue found herself unfulfilled and unhappy.
Fear played a significant role in her career decisions. She stayed in banking for 18 years, convincing herself that she enjoyed the work because she excelled at it. Eventually, burnout and depression followed, culminating in the loss of her banking job. Sue described this as a devastating blow to her identity, as her career had become intrinsically linked to her sense of self-worth.
Sue's turning point came during a mental health and wellness convention hosted by her employer. A speaker introduced the concept of coaching as a transformative tool for personal and professional growth. The speaker's message resonated deeply with Sue, prompting her to reach out and begin her own coaching journey. Though the financial investment was significant, Sue believed it was worth the cost.
Through coaching, Sue reconnected with the childhood belief that anything is possible. She overcame depression, rediscovered her joy, and began building a life that aligned with her true passions. Inspired by her transformation, Sue dedicated herself to helping others achieve similar breakthroughs.
While Sue works with clients of all genders, she focuses primarily on empowering women. Drawing from her own experiences in male-dominated industries, Sue understands the unique challenges women face, including imposter syndrome, guilt, anxiety, and self-doubt. These barriers, she explains, often prevent women from pursuing their goals or recognizing their own abilities.
Imposter syndrome, in particular, is a recurring theme in her coaching practice. Sue emphasizes the importance of developing confidence and self-belief to overcome this pervasive issue. She also encourages clients to rewrite negative narratives, break free from generational trauma, and embrace their potential.
Sue passionately advocates for a more customized approach to education. Recognizing that every child learns differently, she highlights the need for tailored programs that cater to individual strengths. However, she acknowledges that financial constraints often hinder such initiatives. Emotional regulation and emotional intelligence are two critical skills she believes should be cultivated early on to help children grow into emotionally balanced adults.
"Emotional intelligence," Sue explains, "is the ability to understand and regulate emotions." While many adults develop this skill later in life, Sue stresses the importance of fostering it during childhood. She shares her own struggles with emotional regulation in her younger years, emphasizing how much easier it would have been if she had learned these tools earlier.
One of Sue’s favorite concepts is helping her clients reconnect with their inner child. She uses innovative and playful techniques, such as engaging with Barbies, to reignite creativity and imagination. By dressing Barbies or envisioning them in adventurous scenarios, clients can rediscover what they truly aspire to achieve.
This exercise, while simple, serves as a powerful tool for sparking inspiration. Sue explains, "It’s not about the perfect body or appearance. It’s about realizing the person you want to be and the life you want to live." Clients often take these Barbies home as reminders of their dreams and goals.
Sue reflects on the joy of acting like a child, sharing how activities like visiting Disney parks allow her to embrace her inner child, sing, and dance without judgment. “Being immersed in enjoyment and happiness keeps us young,” she adds.
Sue emphasizes the importance of belief—belief in oneself, in society, and in hope. Drawing inspiration from the message of The Lorax, she stresses that personal change can lead to broader transformations. “It starts with you,” she says, advocating for a shift in mindset where individuals take control of their internal thoughts to influence their external reality.
This, however, requires reprogramming. Sue describes the challenge of undoing societal habits that prioritize reacting to external stimuli over cultivating inner strength. While difficult, she reassures her clients that it is possible to reverse these patterns and regain control.
In a playful segment, Sue provides a motivational pep talk for women struggling with imposter syndrome. She explains, "The fear you’re experiencing is all in your head." Sue advises clients to reject the notion of “fake it till you make it” and instead embrace their inherent skills and confidence.
Her practical tip: start each morning by looking in the mirror and affirming, "You are absolutely amazing." This daily practice of self-love can have profound effects on self-confidence and mindset.
Sue shares three transformative daily habits that anyone—women especially—can adopt to cultivate a more empowered mindset:
Positive Affirmations
Start the day by affirming what you want. Sue emphasizes that affirmations must be specific and aligned with your desires. For example, if financial abundance is your goal, you might say, "I am so happy and grateful now that money comes to me in increasing amounts on a continuous basis from multiple sources."Gratitude Practice
Acknowledge and express gratitude for what you already have. Gratitude shifts your mindset to focus on abundance and encourages positivity.Visualization of Goals
Take a moment each morning to visualize your dreams as though they have already been achieved. Imagine the details—what you’re doing, how you feel, and the environment around you. By mentally living in your desired reality, you set the stage for making it happen.
Sue’s journey from fear and burnout to joy and fulfillment serves as a testament to the power of self-belief, mindset shifts, and taking bold action. Through her coaching practice, she helps clients overcome limiting beliefs, reconnect with their inner child, and pursue lives filled with purpose and passion.
Whether it’s addressing imposter syndrome, navigating career transitions, or reprogramming negative habits, Sue’s approach is grounded in practical tools and profound empathy. Her advice to “choose positivity” and to consistently work toward your dreams resonates as a powerful reminder that transformation starts from within.
Sue’s message is clear: You have the power to shape your life. With belief, action, and the right support, you can overcome obstacles, achieve your goals, and unlock your full potential.
