A Heartfelt Conversation About Life, Loss, and Legacy

Make It Count

In this heartfelt episode of the Make It Count show, host Michelle Latocha sat down with Krystal Riddell, founder of Essentials Cremation. It was Krystal’s very first podcast appearance, and her warmth, authenticity, and dedication to her work immediately set the tone for an impactful conversation.

Krystal shared her personal journey, the inspiration behind Essentials Cremation, and her thoughts on balancing professionalism with empathy in a role that touches people’s lives at their most vulnerable moments.

Krystal began her career as a funeral director 20 years ago, attending Humber College and completing her internship before dedicating herself to serving families in the Niagara region.

After 11 years in the field, Krystal felt a calling to build something uniquely her own. She envisioned a space where families could feel comfortable, supported, and cared for during one of life’s most difficult times. This vision became Essentials Cremation, which is now approaching its seven-year anniversary.

Over time, the need for expansion became clear, leading to the opening of a second location in Welland. Each location offers a distinct experience:

  • The Niagara Falls location is modern, bright, and airy, situated in a plaza-style space filled with natural light.

  • The Welland location, on the other hand, is housed in a historic home built in the 1870s, exuding a traditional charm and rich history.

Krystal emphasized that while the two locations are stylistically different, they share a common goal: to provide peace, comfort, and a sense of home for every family who walks through their doors.

When asked how she balances the professionalism required in her role with the deep empathy needed to support grieving families, Krystal’s response was both insightful and genuine:

"It’s natural. When someone walks through our doors, we may not know their story, but our job is to listen, learn, and serve them with care."

This balance is at the heart of Essentials Cremation's success. Krystal and her team prioritize connection over process, making every interaction meaningful and every service deeply personal.

She also highlighted that no two families are the same, and it’s her responsibility to honor each unique story with the respect and care it deserves.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Krystal is deeply involved in her community. Philanthropy isn’t just an extension of her work—it’s a core value she holds close to her heart.

One initiative she’s especially proud of is Essentials’ $50,000 sponsorship of two patios at Hospice Niagara’s Welland location. This contribution isn’t just about financial support; it’s about creating spaces where families can find peace and comfort during challenging moments.

Krystal believes that community care goes hand in hand with her professional mission. She highlighted the importance of collaboration, local support networks, and showing up where help is needed most.

"There’s always time to give back. Sometimes, people just need someone to show up and listen."

The life of a funeral director is anything but predictable. Krystal explained how no two days are ever the same and how plans can shift in an instant.

"Your day might start with two appointments, but one phone call can change everything," she shared.

Despite the unpredictability, Krystal has found a sense of balance. She credits her support system—both at work and at home—for allowing her to keep moving forward with purpose and dedication.

"You just keep going. It’s not about perfection; it’s about being present when people need you most."

One of the most thought-provoking parts of the conversation came when Krystal discussed how society perceives death and grief.

She spoke about the importance of education and open conversations when it comes to end-of-life care. Fear and anxiety often stem from the unknown, and Krystal believes that knowledge and openness can bring peace and clarity to families facing loss.

"I wish people weren’t afraid to talk about it. Having those conversations now can bring so much comfort later."

Krystal also emphasized the value of prearranging funeral plans, not only to ease logistical burdens but as an act of love and preparation for one’s family.

Through every story shared and every family served, Krystal’s passion for her work shines through. Essentials Cremation isn’t just a business—it’s a place where compassion meets professionalism, and where families are guided with care and dignity.

As the conversation came to a close, it was clear that Krystal’s impact goes far beyond her role as a funeral director. She’s a leader, a community advocate, and a source of comfort for so many.
